Food Labelling Changes – December 2014

On the 13th December 2014, the Food Information for Consumers Regulation (EU FIC) will come into force bringing with them a wave of food labelling changes.

The food labelling changes are listed below:

    • Mandatory nutrition information on processed foods must adhere to new regulations
    • Mandatory origin labelling of unprocessed meat from pigs, sheep, goats and poultry. (Beef, fish, honey, olive oil, fresh fruit and vegetables already require this)
    • Highlighting allergens e.g. peanuts or milk in the list of ingredients and not separately
    • Better legibility  – minimum size of text, the height of the lowercase letter ‘x’ in the chosen font must not be less than 1.2mm on the labelling
    • Requirements on information on allergens also cover non pre-packed foods including those sold in restaurants and cafés.

The nutritional information requirement will only apply from 13th December 2016. However, manufacturers who already provide nutrition information must comply with the new rules by 13th December 2014.

Food Labelling Changes to Allergen Listings

It is required that all allergen information is emphasised on the labelling. Any of the 14 allergens outlined in the regulations need to be emphasised on the labelling if they are present in the food. The allergens need to be clearly distinguished from the rest of the list of the ingredients.

The allergens need to be specifically emphasised to consumers by methods such as bold, italics, highlighting or underlining. This is needed to ensure no consumers are unsure about the ingredients of the product and the allergen information. Also, you can no longer state that you don’t know if an allergen is present and you can no longer state that all foods “could” contain allergens. Therefore, new labelling outlining the ingredients is required.

    Food Labelling Changes: Font Size

The size of a letter ‘x’ needs to be greater than 1.2mm on the labelling. The fonts below need to be a minimum of those sizes to meet the demands.
