    Nutrition Labelling Deadline Draws Near

Despite the result of the Referendum on Brexit, the UK remains well and truly part of the EU. As a result, the Nutrition Labelling Deadline is still in force and draws near.

To help customers who fall under the regulations, Positive ID Labelling has developed Nutridata their own in-house software solution to deliver the most difficult requirement: Nutrition data for labelling pre-packaged food. You can obtain software from the dedicated website at http://nutridata.co.uk where there is a range of solutions available to customers.

    Do I need it?

Answer Yes to these questions and you need to take action to avoid falling foul of the nutrition labelling deadline.

    • Food producing business
    • Pre-packaged Food
    • Sold off site

What do I need to do?

Key changes came into effect in December 2014. From 13th December 2016, all food producers who manufacture food for sale pre-packaged and off-site must provide full nutrition data on the labelling of their products.

These changes are on top of the changes in 2014 which included

    • Minimum font sizes – x height must be no smaller than 1.2mm – in practive 6 point font sizes.
    • Allergens highlighted within ingredient listing – it is no longer legal to list allergens separately from ingredients unless packaging is very small
    • Ingredients listed in quantitative order (or QUantitative Ingredient Declaration (QUID))

In turn, those changes are on top of other established practices (amongst others) such as

    • Clearly identifying the product
    • Identifying the product weight
    • Identifying the source of the product – i.e the responsible business

    Nutrition Information

Nutrition data is now required as the last step in the implementation of the EU Directive 1169/2011 commonly called EU Food Information to Consumers or EUFIC.

Nutrition information must be placed on the packaging in accordance with rules regarding position and readability. This can put pressure on manufacturers to fill their labels and lose valuable marketing space.

The key information to include must be stated per 100g or 100ml of product (depending on whether it is liquid or solid). The nutrients to be indicated are:

    • Energy in kJ and kcal
    • Fat (g)
    • Saturated Fat (g)
    • Carbohydrate (g)
    • Sugars (g)
    • Protein (g)
    • Salt (g)

A statement must be made accompanying the table that reads (strictly):

Reference intake of an average adult (8 400 kJ/2 000 kcal)
